OUR APPROACH IS TRULY UNIQUE!
Water is extremely important. We all know that. But what is lesser known is the importance of managing the water so it is accessible for the long run. It is common for charities to give wells to communities who desperately need them.
This is great BUT what happens when the well pump breaks or it becomes contaminated?
The community relies on the same or another charity for funds to fix it. When help isn't immediately available, they're forced to use contaminated water sources again, risking serious health consequences.
This creates a cycle of dependency. This cycle of aid dependence has been happening in Haiti for a long time. So long that Haitians themselves have rarely been exposed to any other way to do it.
Haiti Outreach is unique in that we coach committees on how to sustain and manage the wells themselves with a pay-for-service model!
This approach has proved extremely effective. We have seen 91% of communities coached by Haiti Outreach, are still functioning after 20 years, without any outside aid!
On this day, when we were visiting the water committee of Lewa, committee members were discussing a budget for what to charge for subscribers when the well is up and running. A key step to sustainability. Charge too little and you won't have enough when it is time to fix it. Charge too much and subscribers won't be able to afford it. Either resulting in an unusable well.
The other remarkable thing about this meeting, is that the Mayor of Ferrier is coaching them with our model, NOT Haiti Outreach staff! She meets with them 3 times a week. A true testament to our work - municipal leaders taking responsibility for their commune's water and sanitation!
