Impact

“Over my 40 years of working with NGOs involved in global WASH work, it’s clear that Haiti Outreach is an exceptional success. I say this for two reasons: they deliver long-lasting water supply projects, and they document them really well. The organization is transparent and accountable. It facilitates local leadership and exceptional community-led development. It activates the long-held WASH sector mantra that “hardware follows software” demanding that technical interventions can only follow social transformation. I proudly prepared a step-by-step documentation for IRCWash of their programming; explaining the elements of sustainability that describe their impressive field work in a uniquely difficult setting.”

We know water. We know leadership. Haiti needs both.

Haiti Outreach has partnered with over 520 communities to build wells and water systems, providing daily access to clean water for more than 275,620 people. In 2024 alone, we directly impacted 26,380 people and indirectly reached 225,670 others.

The Pay-for-Service Model

We are the only organization in Haiti coaching communities to implement a sustainable pay-for-service model for water management. This approach has proven remarkably effective:

  • 90% of our coached communities still have operational wells after 20 years

  • Each household pays less than $1 per month

  • The system creates financial sustainability for long-term maintenance

  • Communities develop trust, accountability, and economic growth through ethical practices

Leadership Development

Beyond water infrastructure, we provide coaching to:

  • Municipal leaders throughout Haiti

  • DINEPA (national water board) staff

  • Community water committees

Our coaching works. After receiving our support, water system revenue in a Port-au-Prince neighborhood tripled despite ongoing civil unrest.

Education and Gender Equity

We support student, parent, and teacher committees implementing water and sanitation access in public schools. This work is critical because:

  • Girls frequently drop out during middle school due to lack of facilities

  • Many girls miss school during menstruation when proper sanitation isn't available

  • Our projects help girls stay in school and complete their education

One student committee member in Pignon hadn't used her school bathroom in five years due to poor conditions. After our intervention, she proudly left a legacy of improved facilities for future students.

Broader Community Benefits

Health Improvements

Access to clean water and improved hygiene reduces waterborne diseases, leading to better health outcomes and lower healthcare costs across communities.

Economic Opportunities

Clean water access saves time previously spent collecting water, allowing community members—especially women and children—to pursue education and income-generating activities. Our requirement that committees be at least 50% women-led ensures women have an elevated voice in management decisions.

Collaborative Approach

We work with dozens of local and international partners to maximize our impact and avoid operating in isolation.

Holistic Development

Our work extends beyond water projects to include school construction, local economic support, and environmental sustainability initiatives.

Community Voices

"Haiti Outreach's coaching and transformation of the communities is what we have always needed. The future is different now because the leaders see their own responsibility and are now leading water instruction around the commune." — Claudette Alexander, Administration Counsel for Communal Section

Haiti Outreach's comprehensive, community-focused approach has created lasting improvements in health, economic opportunities, and community resilience throughout Haiti.
