SANITATION INITIATIVE UPDATE
Working alongside UNICEF and following the Haiti Outreach Leadership Coaching model, we're empowering communities to build their own latrines—a critical step toward clean water and improved public health.
With nearly 57% rural Haiti lacking proper sanitation facilities, our approach focuses on sustainable, community-led solutions. Rather than providing financial relief, we coach families to take ownership of their health through building and maintaining their own facilities.
Encouraging and empowering communities is a critical step towards clean water and improved public health
Our team has personally visited 3,751 rural homes (22,390 people) in the 5 communes we were assigned. At the start of this endeavor, 3,081 homes (18,505 people) did not have latrines and were going to the bathroom outside.
As of today, 1,359 latrines have been built out of 3,081 - that’s 44%! Even more exciting, 5 communities have declared themselves completely open-defecation free (ODF)!
While UNICEF contracted with 5 other NGOs—some much larger than us—Haiti Outreach is leading the pack by a wide margin!
Although we’re halfway through this project, Haiti Outreach’s totals are over 1000% greater than any other organization working alongside UNICEF!
Of course any organization making lasting change across the country is praiseworthy, there is still great honor in knowing that our system is remarkably effective and necessary for meaningful development.
With our leadership coaching approach, we're helping communities transform vision into action.
We're grateful to our dedicated team and especially to the community members whose leadership and determination are making this project a success!
