HAITI TRIP: A WORD FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Hello Friends of Haiti Outreach!
I've just returned from an inspiring visit to Pignon, Haiti, where I traveled with our Development Manager, Jen. It was truly wonderful to reconnect with our dedicated staff and meet with several communities and mayor's offices throughout the region.
Despite the concerning news that gangs have recently moved into and taken over Mirabalais (about 30 miles south of Pignon), I'm relieved to report that these groups did not venture northward during our stay. Our team was able to conduct all planned visits safely and productively.
Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be sharing specific stories and insights from our trip. But one thing stands out clearly: the Haiti Outreach team is making an INCREDIBLE difference in people's lives. Our approach of coaching communities to become responsible for themselves rather than relying on charity is proving transformative.
This self-sufficiency model represents a fundamental shift in development work. We firmly believe that Haiti will not truly thrive until this approach is adopted throughout the country. When communities take ownership of their resources and infrastructure, we see sustainable progress that outlasts traditional aid models.
I witnessed firsthand how this philosophy is creating lasting change in several communities we visited. The pride and confidence displayed by local leaders as they showed us their community-managed projects was profoundly moving.
Stay tuned for more detailed updates from our journey. Thank you for your continued support of Haiti Outreach and our vision for a self-reliant Haiti.
With much gratitude,
Ceallaigh Smart, US Executive Director
