CELEBRATION IN LEON: UNVEILING THE NEW WELLHOUSE
In May, we gathered at our annual Minneapolis Spring Soiree to raise money for a wellhouse for the community of Leon. If you remember, Leon was the first community Haiti Outreach coached on our pay-for-service model in 2005. Since then, the whole community has been independently operating the well sustainably and uninterrupted for 20 years! Back then, we didn't include a wellhouse in our initial investment, but with the funds we raised from May’s events, we’re happy to announce that Leon officially has a new wellhouse!
This past week, to celebrate the well’s 20th anniversary and to unveil the new wellhouse, community members of Leon threw a celebration. Together, they sang, danced, and enjoyed water from the newly secured well. The party also included speeches from local community leaders, our trainer and coach My Lovely Joseph, and our Directory of Community Development Roge Michel!
Though this well has been operating for over 20 years without any major problems, this new wellhouse will protect it from any possible damage, theft, or animals, allowing it to continue operating for years to come.
We are so proud of this community and their inspiring story. They have taken ownership of ensuring they have access to safe water for generations to come.
Only 13 homes keep it operating, paying into their transparent bank account each month to pay for repairs. Usually a community well services 25-100 homes. Leon community leaders even still deliver their water report to the Haiti Outreach office each month by motorcycle!
Thank you to all the donors who made this project possible! The community of Leon are incredibly grateful and excited for their new wellhouse.
