Climate Resistance
Haiti Needs Climate Resistance
Haiti contributes very little to the global climate crisis, but due to its geography, climate change has had major effects on the country. Natural disasters, of which Haiti is prone to, have intensified over the past decades creating major disruptions in development, and general quality of life. While the rest of the world focuses on doing their part to slow climate change, Haiti needs to find ways to resist it.
The lack of infrastructure is one of the main contributors to the effects of climate change on Haiti. In addition to intensifying extreme weather events, it slows recovery after these events (which impacts many things such as increased losses of life, poor economic growth, suspension to access of resources, social unrest etc.) and It promotes reliance on non-sustainable sources of energy.
Haiti Outreach’s approach to climate resistance begins with creating sustainable infrastructure, and using sustainable practices whenever possible. Our offices and guesthouse are 100% solarized, and our wells are environmentally sustainable as they use steel and nominal concrete. They produce waste and have little chance of future breakdown. Allowing communities to have reliable access to water during climate disruptions.
Climate Change resistance doesn’t just start and end with developing infrastructure, it also includes changes in behavior. In our leadership coaching, we work with elected officials and high-ranking community leaders to teach not only sanitation practices and personal responsibility, we encourage leaders to promote proper use of the land to their communities. Proper land management helps preserve the land's natural resources and creates the space for sustainable systems to develop.
Climate change is an active threat to the country of Haiti, but by taking action now, we can lessen the effects it has on this beautiful country.
